(1702-1766)
   military figure
Thomas Arthur, baron de Tollendal, count de Lally, who was of Irish origin, was born in Romans. After having distinguished himself in the wars of the Polish and Austrian successions, and having supported the English pretender, Charles Edward Stuart, he was sent to india to lead an important expedition. Authoritarian and badly advised, he alienated the indigenous population as well as his own officers. His defeat at Madras (1758) was followed by his surrender at Pondicherry (1761) after a heroic resistance. He was accused of treason and condemned to death. Some years later, voltaire began the appeal for his rehabilitation and, in 1778, his son, trophime lally-tollendal, obtained a pardon for him from King louis XVI.
